Japanese Randoseru for Hong Kong P1: A4, F4 and Homework Bags
Share
Many Hong Kong parents ask the same question before Primary One: will a Japanese school bag (日本書包) fit what a local school sends home? This guide checks a Japanese randoseru against A4 files, F4 (foolscap) sheets and separate homework bags, using the listed inner sizes of the models we sell in Hong Kong.
The short answer for Hong Kong P1
The listed main compartments accommodate A4 paper, and our standard children’s models state support for Japanese A4 flat files. This is not a guarantee for every A4-labelled binder or zipped homework bag: measure its outside dimensions, including the spine and zip. F4 sheets do not lie flat. An F4 sheet is 33 cm long, and the main compartment of our kids' models is about 31 cm tall inside, so an F4 sheet would need to be folded or carried in a separate bag.
Paper sizes vs. randoseru inner size
The Japan randoseru industry association describes a standard randoseru as having a main compartment with an inner height of about 31 cm and an inner width of about 23 cm. Here is how common paper sizes compare.
| Item | Size | Lies flat in a 31 × 23.5 cm compartment? |
|---|---|---|
| A4 paper | 21.0 × 29.7 cm | Yes |
| A4 flat file | Varies by brand | Specified Japanese A4 flat files: supported; check the outside dimensions of other folders |
| F4 (foolscap) paper | 21.0 × 33.0 cm | No, about 2 cm too long |
Inner sizes of our kids' models
All figures below come from our product pages. Each bag is handmade, so sizes and weights may vary slightly.
| Model | Inner size (H × W × D) | Weight (approx.) | Material |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bolca | 31 × 23.5 × 12.5 cm | 1,290 g | L-fort artificial leather |
| Bolca Grayish | 31 × 23.5 × 12.5 cm | 1,290 g | L-fort artificial leather |
| Glanz V | 31 × 23.5 × 14 cm | 1,230 g | L-fort artificial leather |
| Huo | 31 × 23.5 × 12 cm | 1,340 g | Leather Fort artificial leather |
| Mu+ (Red) | 31 × 23.5 × 13 cm | 1,150 g | Clarino Ev® artificial leather |
| Mu+ (Chocolate) | 31 × 23.5 × 12 cm | 1,100 g | Clarino Ev® artificial leather |
| Leather Bolca | 31 × 23.5 × 14 cm | 1,450 g | Cowhide |
| Takumi | 31 × 23.5 × 12 cm | 1,490 g | Cowhide |
Depth matters as much as height. If your child carries several textbooks and a folder each day, a deeper main compartment such as the 14 cm of the Glanz V or the Leather Bolca leaves more room.
What to do with F4 sheets
Ask the school first
Not every school uses F4. Check the P1 book list or ask the class teacher which folder size is required before you buy anything.
Use a slim F4 folder outside the randoseru
If F4 is needed, a thin F4 folder can go in a homework bag or a tote. Folding F4 sheets in half is another option for notices that do not need to stay flat.
Do not force it
Pushing an F4 folder into the main compartment bends the paper and puts strain on the gussets. The randoseru is built around the A4 standard, so it works best when used that way.
Homework bags and the randoseru
If your school asks for a separate homework bag (功課袋), check its size against the table above. A homework bag may be larger than the paper it holds. Measure its outer height, width and thickness and allow space for books; the A4 label alone does not confirm a fit. A bag sized for F4 will be too tall to lie flat and is better carried by hand.
Many randoseru also have side hooks for a light bag, such as a shoe bag or a lunch bag. Please do not hang heavy items from them, as this pulls the bag off balance.
Leather or artificial leather for a P1 child?
The listed inner height and width are similar across these standard children’s models, but depth varies from 12 to 14 cm. Compare usable capacity as well as weight, feel and care. Artificial leather models are lighter, from about 1,100 g. Cowhide models are heavier, around 1,450 to 1,490 g, and have the character of real leather.
